Many hours every day of the non-supply of electricity resulted in almost one hundred (100) of the unionized workforce which are represented by the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union and the Guyana Labour Union resorting to strike action with effect from September 19, 2012 at the Demerara Timbers Limited – Mabura location.
The workers who reside at the Company’s Township, a short distance from the workplace have endured the organized outage for some weeks now. The Company advised the Union that costliness of diesel fuel and the large quantity of daily use have influenced the Company’s decision to allow restricted electricity supply.
The workers have pointed to the disuse of their refrigerators, the inability to use their fans in the present hot weather and the deterioration of important medication at the Company’s Health Centre as matters of great concern.
GAWU is seeking to have an assurance by the Company for the full restoration of the electricity supply and for normalcy to prevail at the location.
