GAWU surprised by Guysuco’s inability to pay this week’s wages

The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) was surprised to learn from the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc (Guysuco) on December 03, 2009 that it would be unable to pay the usual weekly wages on December 04, 2009 because of a temporary cash flow shortfall.

Some 16,000 workers would, therefore, be greatly inconvenienced in meeting their weekly expenses, resulting from this most unfortunate development for the first time in the history of the industry.

The Union learnt today, December 04, 2009, that the Corporation has been able to borrow close to G$200M to add to its cash at hand to settle this week’s wage bill said to be approximately G$290M on (Monday) December 07, 2009.

The Union hopes that in the ensuing weeks, when sugar workers, like all other Guyanese, celebrate the Christmas and New Year holidays, the Corporation must ensure that this situation is not repeated.
