19th Congress to be held in August

The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) will convene its 19th Congress during August, 2009 and preparatory work is already proceeding apace. The Opening Session will be held at the Guyana International Conference Centre on August 15, 2009 and the Business Session at J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School, Corentyne, Berbice on August 17-18, 2009.

The feature address will be delivered by Dr. Freek Schiphorst, Senior Lecturer in Labour Relations from the Institute of Social Sciences in the Hague, Netherlands. Dr Schiphorst will also declare the Congress open. The Congress which is held triennially will review the work of the Union since its last Congress in August, 2006 and set out tasks for the ensuing three years.

The Congress is the Union’s highest decision making forum and it is expected to have some 500 delegates from the its membership at the Guyana Sugar Corporation, Fisheries, Rum & Soft Drink, Forestry, Clerical and Timber entities. High on the Congress’ agenda will be the Reform of the EU Sugar Regime and the challenges posed to the local sugar industry as well as a number of other issues which are affecting members. Congress will consider a number of motions and elect a new General Council.
