GAWU Berbice Area Conference this weekend

The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) convenes a Delegates’ Conference under the theme: “Education and Unity Vital to Confront Challenges Successfully” on July 20, 2008 at St Patrick Primary School, East Canje Berbice. The Conference will comprise of delegates from the Union’s membership in the Berbice sugar Estates and the Mahaica, Mahaicony Abary Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA).

Two Area Conferences of the Union – in Berbice and Demerara – must take place between Congresses of the Union according to the Union’s Constitution. The last Union’s Congress was held in August 2006 and the next will take place in 2009.

The highlight of the day’s Conference will provide delegates with the opportunity to discuss the Union’s General Council Report which will be presented by Cde Seepaul Narine, General Secretary of the Union.

Resolutions will also be approved and delegates will undoubtedly identify issues which may not be included in the Report for discussions. Suggestion for future work of the Union will also be highlighted.

GAWU is steadfast in holding its Congress, Area Conference, Annual Branch Meetings and period interactions with its rank and file. All its statutory meetings of the Central Executive Committee, General Council and Secretariat are held throughout the year. The Union never falters in having its Audited Financial Statements approved by the Office of the Auditor General in a timely manner. The Statements for year ended 31st December 2007 have already been issued in accordance with Section 22 (1) of the Trade Union Act, Chapter 98:03 of the Laws of Guyana.

Dr N.K. Gopaul, Permanent Secretary of the Office of the President and former President of the National Association of Agricultural, Clerical, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) will declare the Conference open at 09:00hrs.
