The martyrdom of the Enmore five reminds all Guyanese that the sugar plantation was synonymous with slavery and indentureship. It was on the soil of the plantations that many battles were fought by the slaves and the indentured labourers against the plantocracy. Dr Cheddi Jagan inspired thousands of sugar workers in his political awakening call launched in 1946 following his return from study overseas. The death of the five Enmore Martyrs galvanized Cheddi Jagan’s conviction for his steadfast and dedicated struggle he waged following their brutal death in June, 1948.

GAWU as the major representative bargaining agent for the nation’s sugar workers – calls on the government of Guyana, the political parties, trade unions and all social organisations to bond themselves vis a vis global warming, criminality, HIV/AIDS and terrorism.
